South Korea Whiskey

South Korea whiskeys are shaped by two forces at once: a long consumer familiarity with whiskey as a status and nightlife drink, and a newer wave of enthusiasm that has made South Korea one of the fastest-growing whiskey markets in the world. For years, whiskey in South Korea was often tied to imported Scotch, corporate entertaining, premium bars, and gift culture, existing alongside the far more dominant everyday role of soju. More recently, though, whiskey has expanded beyond that narrower image. South Koreans consumed 14.2 million litres of whisky in 2022, up 46 percent from 2021, reflecting a sharp rise in interest and a broader shift in how whiskey is being purchased and enjoyed. That growth matters because it suggests that South Korea whiskeys are no longer just about formal prestige or legacy imports. The category is becoming more flexible, more visible, and more connected to younger drinkers and specialized spirits culture. Even so, the national backdrop still matters: soju remains the defining Korean spirit in everyday life, while whiskey occupies a more premium and increasingly fashionable lane. So South Korea whiskeys are best framed as a booming market category rather than the country’s foundational native spirit tradition.
